Lake County is situated in the heart of Colorado and is famous for its rich mining history and stunning mountain landscapes. Established on November 1, 1861, as one of the 17 original counties in the then Colorado Territory, Lake County played a vital role during the Colorado Silver Boom in the late 19th century. The county gets its name from the Twin Lakes, two alpine glacial lakes in its western portion.

Leadville, Lake County's county seat, and highest incorporated city in the United States, was founded in 1877 during the silver boom. Known as "Cloud City," Leadville was not just a mining hub but also a center for trade and entertainment for silver miners. At its peak during the 1880s, Leadville's population reached around 40,000 people.

One fun fact about Lake County is that it hosts one of the most grueling endurance races in the world. The Leadville Trail 100, known as the "Race Across the Sky," is a 100-mile ultramarathon race held annually since 1983. The race starts and finishes in Leadville and covers roughly 50 miles of mountainous terrain, with participants reaching elevations of over 12,000 feet.
