Lincoln County is located on the Eastern Plains of Colorado and was established by the Colorado legislature in 1889, named in honor of President Abraham Lincoln. Before its establishment, the land was part of the ancestral territories of the Cheyenne, Arapaho, and Ute Native American tribes. During the westward expansion of the United States, the region became part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803.

The Kansas Pacific Railroad reached the area in the 1870s, which brought a significant increase in settlers and economic development. Agriculture played a major role in the growth of the county, with crop and livestock farming being the primary industries. In addition to agriculture, the county also experienced growth in the 20th century due to the development of the oil and gas industry.

The county seat, Hugo, became an important trading point for the surrounding rural areas, and other towns in the county include Limon, Genoa, and Karval. Today, Lincoln County remains primarily rural, with the economy anchored in agriculture and renewable energy production, including wind and solar energy.

Fun fact: In Lincoln County, you can find the the Wonder Tower - also known as the "Wonder View Tower" - in the town of Genoa. Built in 1926, it is an 80-foot tall, seven-story observation tower that provided early visitors with stunning views of the surrounding landscape, including the distant Rocky Mountains. At one time, it was known as the "highest point between New York and Denver" due to the tower's elevation of 5,751 feet above sea level.
