Rio Grande County, situated in the great state of Colorado, was established on February 10, 1874. It was named after the Rio Grande River, which translates to "Big River" in Spanish. The river played a key role in trade and agriculture, as it is one of the primary water resources in the area. The county covers approximately 912 square miles, with the city of Del Norte being its county seat.

Rio Grande County is home to an array of historical sites and natural beauty, consisting of Hispanic, Native American, and early Anglo-American influences. The county's early development was significantly influenced by the arrival of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad in 1871, which enabled commerce as well as expanded transportation and communication networks.
