San Miguel County is located in the southwestern region of the great state of Colorado. It was officially established in 1883, and its county seat is Telluride. The county spans across an area of 1,290 square miles and had a population of roughly 8,378 as of the 2020 census.

Originally home to the Ute Native American tribe, the area saw an influx of European settlers, particularly miners, during the mid-19th century. The initial economic boom in San Miguel County was a result of the discovery of gold in the region, leading to the establishment of numerous mining camps, such as Telluride and Sawpit.

Telluride, the county seat, eventually became known for its rich deposits of gold and silver. In fact, the famous mining tycoon, L. L. Nunn, constructed the world's first commercial AC (alternating current) power plant in the late 19th century to support Telluride's mining industry. Today, Telluride is a popular ski resort town and hosts various film and music festivals.

A fun fact about San Miguel County is that Telluride's historic downtown has been designated as a National Historic Landmark District due to its well-preserved Victorian-era architecture. Additionally, the county is well-known for its outdoor recreational activities, such as hiking, mountain biking, and skiing, making it a popular destination for adventure enthusiasts.
