Yuma County is located in the northeastern part of Colorado, with its county seat in the city of Wray. The county was created on March 15, 1889, from a portion of Washington County. Yuma County got its name from the Yuma Native American tribe who inhabited the area long before European settlers arrived.

The county has a strong agricultural history. In the early days, the area was primarily populated by ranchers and cowboys. As the region began to develop, farming became a crucial economic driver. The introduction of irrigation and the arrival of the railroad in the early 20th century further enhanced the region's growth and prosperity. Today, Yuma County remains a predominantly agricultural region, known for its production of wheat, corn, and livestock.

One fun fact about Yuma County, Colorado, is that it is home to the famous Beecher Island, a historical landmark located in the Arikaree River. Beecher Island was the site of The Battle of Beecher Island in 1868, where a group of 50 frontiersmen known as the "Beecher Island Scouts" fought against an estimated 700 Native American warriors from the Cheyenne, Sioux, and Arapaho tribes. The Scouts, led by Colonel George A. Forsyth, valiantly held their ground for nine days, resulting in a decisive victory that marked a turning point in U.S. and Native American relations in the region.
