Sussex County, located in the southern part of the great state of Delaware, is the largest of the state's three counties. It was originally established in 1683 by the Duke of York and later confirmed as a county in 1739. Sussex County shares a rich history with both Native American and European settlers.

The region was once inhabited by Native American tribes, such as the Nanticoke and the Lenape, who relied on the area's abundant natural resources. European settlers began arriving in the early 17th century, initially led by explorer Captain Cornelius Jacobsen May, who landed in the area now known as Lewes in 1631. A Dutch trading post called the Zwaanendael Colony was established in the same location, but it was subsequently destroyed in a conflict with local Native American tribes.

The English later gained control of the area following the Second Anglo-Dutch War in the 1660s, and they set about making substantial land grants to encourage settlement. Over the years, Sussex County grew in size and significance, contributing to the development of Delaware as a whole.

The region's agricultural roots are still evident today, as Sussex County remains a key agricultural center for Delaware, with poultry farming being a mainstay of its economy. In terms of geography, Sussex County boasts a mix of lush farmland, picturesque coastline, and charming small towns.

A fun fact about Sussex County is that it is home to one of the largest and oldest coastal live oak trees, known as the "Methuselah Tree," in the United States. This majestic tree, believed to be around 500 years old, stands tall at over 75 feet and has a trunk circumference of 27 feet, symbolizing the rich natural heritage of the region.
