Delaware State Motto: Liberty and Independence
Front of the US quarter dollar coin   Delaware State Quarter

The Delaware state quarter was created by US Mint designer John Flanagan in 1999 and released in 1999 as part of the US Mint's 50 State Quarters Program. The design of the Delaware quarter features a colonial-era sailing ship, the Kalmar Nyckel, in full sail on the Delaware River, with the Delaware state motto, "Liberty and Independence" written above it. Symbols of the state's history, such as an ear of corn, a farmer, and the state's coat of arms, are also featured. The reverse of the coin features a depiction of Caesar Rodney on horseback, with the words "The First State" written above him. The Caesar Rodney symbolizes the spirit of independence, as he was a signer of the Declaration of Independence and served as a delegate from Delaware.

The second Delaware State Quarter

The Delaware National Park quarter was released on August 31, 2020 as a part of the America the Beautiful Quarters series. The series began in 2010 and is an ongoing program of the United States Mint to produce coins that showcase national parks and other national sites in each of the 50 states, U.S. territories, and the District of Columbia.

The Delaware National Park quarter features a scene of a father and daughter fishing in a small boat in the Delaware national park. The image is a representation of the recreational opportunities that the park offers. The image is framed by the words "Delaware National Park" and is surrounded by a stylized border of beach grasses.

The reverse of the coin features a rendition of the Statue of Liberty, which symbolizes the ideals of freedom and democracy that the United States stands for. The words "E Pluribus Unum" and "United States of America" are inscribed along the rim of the coin.

The America the Beautiful Quarters series is a program that is meant to honor and recognize the natural beauty, cultural heritage, and historical significance of the United States. By creating these coins, the United States Mint is continuing its long-standing tradition of commemorating and celebrating the spirit of America.
