Charlotte County, situated on the southwest coast of Florida, was established on April 23, 1921, from a portion of DeSoto County. Named in honor of Queen Charlotte Sophia, the wife of British King George III, the county has a rich and intriguing history.

The region was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, such as the Calusa and Seminole. Spanish explorers, including Ponce de Leon, arrived in the early 16th century, and Florida became a Spanish colony. The territory changed hands between the Spanish, British, and eventually the United States in 1821.

Punta Gorda, the county seat, was founded in 1884, strategically located at the intersection of Charlotte Harbor and the Peace River. The arrival of the Florida Southern Railway in the late 19th century greatly aided the growth and development of the region. The railway helped establish connections to multiple destinations, spurring trade and the local economy.

One fun fact about Charlotte County is that it hosts an annual "Discover the Island" event allowing visitors to explore Gasparilla Island and Boca Grande both essential to the region's history through guided tours of cultural and historical sites such as the Boca Grande Lighthouse and Port Boca Grande.
