Citrus County is located on the west coast of Florida and is part of the Nature Coast region. It was established on June 2, 1887, and was named after the citrus groves that once dominated the area. The original county seat was Mannfield, but in 1891, the seat was moved to Inverness after the construction of the courthouse.

The historical background of Citrus County is marked by Native American settlements, like the Tocobaga and Timucua tribes, and later by Spanish explorers in the 16th century. The first permanent European settler in the area was David Yulee, who constructed the Yulee Sugar Mill Ruins in 1851. In later years, Citrus County became an important hub for turpentine and timber industries, with the towns of Dunnellon and Crystal River serving as important centers for the phosphate industry.

One fun fact about Citrus County is that it is home to a significant population of West Indian Manatees who inhabit the Crystal River and Homosassa River, making it one of the best places in the world to view these gentle marine creatures up close, especially during the winter months when they migrate to the area's springs for warmth. The Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1983 to protect the manatees and their habitat. The county's natural landscapes also provide ample opportunities for outdoor recreational activities such as fishing, kayaking, and birdwatching.
