DeSoto County, Florida is located in the southwestern part of the state and was established on May 19, 1887. It was named after the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto, who is known for his extensive exploration of the southeastern United States in the early 16th century.

Before the formation of DeSoto County, the region was once occupied by several indigenous tribes, including the Calusa, the Muspa/Estero, and the Seminole Indians. During the Seminole Wars in the early 1800s, US forces fought to drive out the Seminole people, leading to eventual European-American settlement in the area.

Initially, the county was much larger and included the present-day counties of Charlotte, Glades, Hardee, and Highlands. However, due to population growth and changing needs, these counties were split from DeSoto County in 1921.

Throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s, DeSoto County thrived with robust agricultural and cattle-raising industries. The county has experienced cycles of growth and decline, with freezes devastating the local citrus industry on multiple occasions.

Fun Fact: One fascinating fact about DeSoto County is that, in 1960, Charles Scherer, a pharmacist in the town of Arcadia, invented Gatorade within its borders. The drink was created to help University of Florida football players stay hydrated under the scorching Florida sun. Gatorade has since become one of the world's most popular sports drinks, and it all started in DeSoto County, Florida.
