Hendry County, located in the southwestern part of Florida, was established on May 11, 1923. The county was named in honor of Captain Francis A. Hendry, a Florida cattle rancher, politician, and military officer who served during the Seminole Wars. The region was initially inhabited by the Calusa Tribe but was later taken over by European explorers like the Spanish, who arrived in the 16th century.

Hendry County's total area is approximately 1,190 square miles, and it is bordered by Glades County to the north, Palm Beach County to the east, Broward County to the southeast, and Collier County to the south. The county seat of Hendry County is LaBelle, while Clewiston, a larger city, is known as "America's Sweetest Town," owing to its sugar production.

One fun fact about Hendry County is that it hosts the Annual Swamp Cabbage Festival in LaBelle, which celebrates the sabal palm, also known as the cabbage palm. This tree's heart can be consumed as a vegetable known as "swamp cabbage." The festival, which takes place in February, includes a variety of events such as parades, live music, and armadillo races.
