Highlands County is located in the central part of the state of Florida, USA. Established on April 23, 1921, it is named after the terrain of the land, which features gentle rolling hills. The county initially formed as part of DeSoto County until it was divided into five separate counties, with Highlands County being one of them. It has its administrative seat in the city of Sebring.

Before the arrival of European settlers, the region was primarily inhabited by the Seminole Native American tribe. In the early 1900s, agricultural development and urban planning significantly shaped the county's growth. Citrus farming and cattle ranching played a significant role in the local economy.

Sebring, the county's largest city, is renowned for its automotive racing history. A fun fact about Highlands County is that it is home to the Sebring International Raceway, which hosts the famous annual 12 Hours of Sebring endurance race, a part of the prestigious IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. This race has drawn enthusiasts and race teams from around the world since its inception in 1952.
