Hillsborough County, situated in the wonderful state of Florida, has a rich historical background. The county was officially established on January 25, 1834, when the Florida Territorial Legislature carved it out from the southern portion of Alachua County and the eastern part of St. Johns County. Its establishment took place during the administration of Florida Governor William Pope Duval, resulting in the county being named in honor of Wills Hill, the first Earl of Hillsborough, who was the British Secretary of State for the Colonies. At the time, Hillsborough County covered a vast area which now includes present-day Polk, Manatee, Hardee, DeSoto, Sarasota, Charlotte, Lee, and portions of Pinellas and Highlands Counties.

The county's first European encounter dates back to the Spanish explorer Pnfilo de Narvez, who reached the region in 1528. In the 16th and 17th centuries, Spanish conquistadors, missionaries, and settlers arrived in the area, interacting with indigenous inhabitants such as the Tocobaga and Pohoy tribes of the Safety Harbor culture.

The region then underwent a transformation following the Adams-Ons Treaty in 1819, when Florida was ceded to the United States from Spain. The Florida Territorial Period commenced in 1821, fostering American settlement and infrastructure developments in Hillsborough County. In 1845, Florida achieved statehood, ultimately making Hillsborough County part of the newly-formed state.

Over the years, the economy of Hillsborough County diversified with the emergence of the phosphate industry, agriculture, and railroad construction in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The county expanded its transportation infrastructure and emerged as a vital shipping and communication center.

Now, a fun fact about Hillsborough County is that it is home to the "longest continuous sidewalk" in the USA. The sidewalk spans approximately 4.5 miles (7.2 kilometers) along Bayshore Boulevard in the city of Tampa, the county seat. Visitors and residents alike enjoy walking, jogging, and biking along this scenic path with picturesque views of the Tampa Bay shoreline.
