Holmes County, located in the great state of Florida, was established on January 8, 1848. Named after Thomas J. Holmes, who arrived in the area from North Carolina around 1830, the county was originally a part of Walton County before being separated to its own entity. Covering a total area of 489 square miles, Holmes County lies within the Florida Panhandle region and is bordered by Alabama to the north.

The county seat is Bonifay, named after one of its earliest settlers, Frank Bonifay. The city became the county seat in 1905, when the Bay Line Railroad was constructed and facilitated economic development by connecting to southern markets.

In the mid-19th century, Holmes County experienced a rapid population increase, and as a result, the growth of various industries such as timber, turpentine, and agriculture flourished in the area. Today, Holmes County prides itself on its picturesque beauty, as well as its cultural and historical heritage, attracting visitors to enjoy its natural wonders and historical sites.

Fun fact: Holmes County is home to Keith Cabin, a remarkably preserved historic log cabin built in the 19th century by Joseph S. Keith. It stands as a representation of early frontier life during the region's early settlement era and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
