Indian River County, located in the great state of Florida, was established on May 30, 1925. It was carved out of the northern part of the St. Lucie County and named for the beautiful Indian River Lagoon that flows along the Atlantic Coast. The county seat is Vero Beach, one of the three main cities of the county along with Sebastian and Fellsmere.

The region has a rich history, having been inhabited by indigenous people, the Ais tribe, for thousands of years. Europeans, including the Spanish explorers, arrived in the 1500s, but the area remained relatively undeveloped for centuries. It was rural and agricultural until the 1900s when significant development and population growth took place.

The railroad played a major role in the county's growth, starting with the arrival of Henry Flagler's Florida East Coast Railroad, which connected the coast to major cities and led to the expansion of trade and businesses. Agriculture, particularly citrus, became a strong economic driver for the region, and Indian River's oranges and grapefruits gained worldwide recognition for their high quality.

One fun fact about Indian River County is that it is home to Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge, which was declared as the first national wildlife refuge in the United States by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1903. The refuge was established to protect the diverse bird species and their habitats on the island, and it remains an important sanctuary for wildlife preservation to this day.
