Jefferson County, located in the great state of Florida, is steeped in rich history. Established on January 20, 1827, the county was named after Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States (18011809) and one of the founding fathers. It is situated in the Big Bend region of Florida and is part of the Tallahassee Metropolitan Statistical Area. Covering an area of 637 square miles, the county seat of Jefferson County is the historical town of Monticello.

Throughout its history, Jefferson County was primarily an agricultural community. Its fertile land led to the growth of several plantations where cotton, tobacco, and other crops were cultivated. The arrival of railroads in the 19th century spurred further development, with many southern planters, merchants, and professionals moving to the area. Monticello, in particular, became a hub of prosperity and social life for wealthy plantation owners.

During the Civil War, Jefferson County contributed both troops and resources to the Confederate cause. The Waukeenah community was an important recruitment and mustering location for the Confederate Army, with 27 companies joining the fight.

In the post-war era, the county focused on rebuilding and modernization. As the 20th century progressed, Jefferson County's economy shifted from agriculture towards service industries, healthcare, and education. Some remnants of the county's plantation past have been preserved, such as the Letchworth-Love Mounds Archaeological State Park, which is home to Native American mounds dating back to 1100 CE.

One fun fact about Jefferson County is that it's home to the annual Monticello Watermelon Festival, which dates back to 1950. This vibrant event celebrates the community's storied history and its unique ties to the watermelon industry. Every summer, the festival features live music, parades, arts and crafts, and plenty of refreshing watermelons.
