Lake County, located in the heart of Florida, was established on May 27, 1887. It was carved out from portions of Orange and Sumter counties and named for its numerous lakes, which cover over 200 square miles within its boundaries. Tavares was designated as the county seat, and the area's original inhabitants included the Seminole Native Americans before European settlers arrived.

Due to its rich soil and warm climate, Lake County thrived in the agricultural sector, with citrus fruits, pineapples, and vegetables being the primary crops. However, the Great Freeze of 1894-1895 and 1985 wiped out some of the citrus groves, leading to diversification in the economy.

The county experienced significant growth as the railroad was extended to the region in the late 19th century. In the first decades of the 20th century, Lake County began focusing on tourism and developing its natural resources, including the miles of waterfronts and vast tracts of forests.

One fun fact about Lake County is that it is home to the "Mount Dora Lighthouse," one of only three freshwater lighthouses in Florida. The lighthouse, which serves as a navigational aid, was constructed in 1988 in the charming town of Mount Dora on Lake Dora's shoreline. Although the 35-feet tall lighthouse is not a historic building, it is a unique architectural feature and an iconic symbol of Lake County's maritime heritage.
