Lee County is located in the southwestern part of the state of Florida, United States. Established on May 13, 1887, it was named in honor of Robert E. Lee, the Confederate General during the American Civil War. The county seat is Fort Myers, which is also one of its largest cities.

The history of Lee County is deeply rooted in the indigenous Calusa people who inhabited the area over 2,000 years ago. The Calusa left behind numerous shell mounds and artifacts that can still be seen today. In the early 16th century, Spanish explorers such as Ponce de Len and Pedro Menndez de Avils encountered the Calusa people but were unable to establish any permanent settlements due to conflict and disease.

In the 1800s, the United States gained control of Florida, and settlers gradually started moving into the Lee County region. Thomas Edison, a prominent American inventor and businessman, played a pivotal role in the development of the Fort Myers area. He built his winter estate and laboratory there in 1885, which contributed to the growth of the region.

One fun fact about Lee County is that it is known for having several beautiful islands, such as Sanibel, Captiva, and Cayo Costa. These islands are renowned for their stunning beaches and are considered some of the best places for shelling in the United States. Visitors from all over the world travel to Lee County to enjoy its pristine beaches, wildlife preserves, and recreational activities.
