Liberty County is located in the Florida Panhandle, a region in the northwest part of the state. Established on December 15, 1855, it was named in honor of the popular American ideal of liberty. The county's population is relatively small, with approximately 8,000 residents according to the 2020 U.S. Census.

One of the earliest known inhabitants of the region was the Apalachee tribe of Native Americans. European explorers, including the Spanish, began making contact in the 1500s. After a period of Spanish colonization, Florida (including Liberty County) became a territory of the United States in 1821.

The county has a strong agricultural background, with cotton, corn, and livestock playing a significant role in its economy during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Like much of Florida, the timber industry also became an important part of Liberty County's development.

Liberty County is noted for its abundant outdoor recreational opportunities, including the Apalachicola National Forest and the Torreya State Park. Fun fact: Torreya State Park is home to the rare and endangered Torreya tree, which is one of the oldest tree species on Earth, dating back about 160 million years. Due to this rarity, the park attracts visitors interested in botany and enjoying beautiful hiking trails along with scenic views of the Apalachicola River.
