Nassau County, located in the northeastern part of Florida, shares its name with the beautiful Nassau County of New York. Established on December 29, 1824, this Florida county occupies an area of 726 square miles and has a population of around 88,000 people. The county was originally part of St. Johns County and got its name in honor of the Duchy of Nassau in Germany.

Nassau County was the site of significant developments during the Civil War. It was a desirable location for both the Union and Confederate forces due to its proximity to the Georgia border and the nearby navigable waters. Fernandina Beach, a city within the county, was occupied by Union troops in 1862, who controlled Fort Clinch. Fort Clinch was an important military fortification during the Seminole Wars, the Civil War, and the Spanish-American War.

With considerable portions of the county bordering the beautiful coastline of the Atlantic Ocean, Nassau County attracts numerous tourists each year for its beautiful beaches, nature reserves, and historical sites.

A fun fact about Nassau County is that it is home to the oldest saloon in Florida, the Palace Saloon, which was established in 1903. This iconic saloon at Fernandina Beach features unique architectural details, giving visitors a taste of the region's rich history.
