Orange County, located in the central region of Florida, was established on December 31, 1821, as Mosquito County. However, due to the unpleasant association with mosquitoes and their role in spreading diseases, in 1845, the county was renamed Orange County to represent the area's booming citrus industry. The county seat is the city of Orlando.

The area was initially inhabited by indigenous Native American tribes, including the Seminole and Timucua peoples. European settlers arrived in the 16th century, first under Spain's control and later under British rule. After the United States acquired Florida from Spain in 1821, it became a part of the state's ongoing development.

Orange County's early economy mainly centered around agriculture, specifically citrus groves, which grew into the largest industry in the region. However, Orange County faced many challenges at the time, such as the Great Freeze of 1894-1895 that destroyed numerous citrus crops.

Towards the mid-20th century, Orange County's economy diversified with a growing presence of aerospace and defense industries, most notably the establishment of the Martin Marietta Corporation (which later joined Lockheed Martin). The tourism industry also began to thrive, as Central Florida experienced rapid development with the opening of Walt Disney World in 1971. Concurrently, the International Drive area developed into a destination for conventions, attractions, and other entertainment venues.

Today, Orange County is known for its robust tourism industry, home to numerous theme parks, including Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, and SeaWorld. The Orlando International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the United States, serving as a gateway for tourists visiting Orange County.

Fun Fact: Orlando is home to the largest McDonald's restaurant in the world. Located on International Drive, this massive, three-story McDonald's features unique menu items, such as custom-made pizzas, pasta dishes, and an extensive dessert bar. Additionally, the restaurant has an array of arcade games, making it a popular family destination.
