Saint Johns County, located in the northeastern part of Florida, was established on July 21, 1821, as one of the two original counties created after the United States acquired the territory of Florida from Spain. The county is named after the St. Johns River, which runs along its western border.

The rich history of Saint Johns County dates back to the early 16th century when Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Len first landed near present-day St. Augustine in 1513, later claiming the territory for Spain. This area was named La Florida, meaning "land of flowers." St. Augustine, the county seat, was founded on September 8, 1565, by Spanish admiral Pedro Menndez de Avils, making it the oldest continuously inhabited European-established settlement within the borders of the continental United States.

Throughout its history, Saint Johns County has seen multiple occupations and battles, including both British and Spanish rule during the colonial period. Florida officially became a U.S. territory in 1821, following the signing of the Adams-Ons Treaty. The county thrived during the antebellum period, with agriculture playing a significant role in the local economy.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the county's coastal resorts and natural beauty attracted wealthy tourists and investors like Henry Flagler, who played a significant role in developing the region's infrastructure, including building luxurious hotels and extending the Florida East Coast Railway.

Today, Saint Johns County remains a bustling area steeped in history and natural beauty, with picturesque coastal towns and national landmarks such as Castillo de San Marcos, Fort Matanzas, and the St. Augustine Lighthouse.

Fun Fact: St. Augustine, in Saint Johns County, is not only the oldest city in Florida but also has the oldest wooden schoolhouse in the United States, which dates back to the early 18th century.
