Saint Lucie County is located on the Treasure Coast of Florida and was officially created on June 24, 1905, from a portion of Brevard County. The county was named after Saint Lucy, also known as Saint Lucia, the patron saint of the blind. The County seat and largest city is Fort Pierce, which has been nicknamed the "Sunrise City" due to its beautiful sunrises on the east coast of Florida.

Historically, the area was first inhabited by various Native American tribes such as the Ais, who had an extensive fishing and trade network in the region. The arrival of Europeans dates back to the 16th century when the Spanish began exploring and establishing missions along the Florida coast.

The United States acquired Florida from Spain in 1821, but it was not until the mid-19th century that significant settlement began in the area that would become Saint Lucie County. Agriculture and fishing were the primary industries of the region, and pineapple and citrus farming were particularly popular.

The county experienced rapid population growth in the mid-20th century, fueled by the Florida land boom of the 1920s and the expansion of the Florida East Coast Railway, which facilitated transportation along the state's east coast.

One fun fact about Saint Lucie County is the intriguing history surrounding the 1715 Spanish Treasure Fleet. A hurricane struck and sunk eleven of the twelve Spanish ships carrying a vast amount of treasure off the coast, giving the region its name, "Treasure Coast." Today, treasure hunters still search the waters for the remains of the sunken ships and their fabled treasures.
