Santa Rosa County is located in the northwestern part of the state of Florida, in the beautiful region known as the Florida Panhandle. Established on February 18, 1842, the county was named after Saint Rose of Viterbo, an Italian saint from the 13th century. Santa Rosa County has its administrative center in the city of Milton and is part of the Pensacola-Ferry Pass-Brent Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The area was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, such as the Muscogee people who were part of the larger Creek Confederacy. Spanish explorers arrived in the 16th century, and the area was under Spanish colonial rule until 1819 when Florida became a territory of the United States. In 1845, Florida achieved statehood and Santa Rosa County was one of the original counties. Over the years, the county has experienced growth in various industries, including agriculture, tourism, and military presence, with key military installations such as the Naval Air Station Whiting Field and the Hurlburt Field.

A fun fact about Santa Rosa County is that it is home to the Blackwater River State Park, a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts. The park offers various recreational activities such as canoeing, kayaking, and fishing. The Blackwater River is considered one of the purest sand-bottom rivers in the world due to its unique ecosystem and natural tannic water.
