Union County is a small, rural county located in the north-central region of the great state of Florida. Established on May 20, 1921, it is the youngest county in Florida. The county was created from portions of Bradford County and serves as a testament to the perseverance of its residents. The county seat is Lake Butler, which also serves as the county's largest city. As of the 2020 census, Union County had a population of approximately 15,300 people.

Before European contact, the area was inhabited by indigenous tribes, notably the Timucua people, who lived in the region for centuries. In the 16th century, Spanish explorers arrived in Florida, forever changing the landscape and culture of the region. Over time, the territory switched hands between the Spanish, the British, and eventually became part of the United States in 1821. The area that would become Union County was home to many plantations and agricultural developments in the 1800s, focusing primarily on the growth of cotton and vegetables.

The county was named in honor of the strong sense of unity among the residents after the establishment of the county. Union County's economy has historically been largely centered around agriculture, particularly the production of peanuts, watermelon, and timber.

A fun fact about Union County is that it is the smallest county in Florida, covering only 249 square miles, which makes it easy for residents to establish close relationships and enjoy a strong sense of community.
