Washington County is located in the Panhandle region of Florida. According to the 2019 U.S. Census Bureau, the county has an estimated population of 25,824. The racial makeup of Washington County was 70.5% White, 23.5% African American, 0.7% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, and 2.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.3% of the population.

The median income for a household in Washington County was $31,943 and the median income for a family was $40,688 (in 2017). About 19.5% of families and 24.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 38.2% of those under age 18 and 14.7% of those age 65 or over.

The county has an area of 971 square miles and is mostly rural with small towns scattered throughout its landscape. Agriculture is one of its main industries with farms producing peanuts, corn, cotton and hay among other crops as well as livestock such as cows, hogs and poultry. The county also has a few large manufacturing plants which provide jobs to many local residents.
