Atkinson County, located in the great state of Georgia, was established on August 15, 1917. It was created from portions of Clinch and Coffee Counties following a bill passed by the Georgia General Assembly. The county was named in honor of William Yates Atkinson, who served as the state's governor from 1894 to 1898 and had a strong focus on education and prison reforms during his tenure.

The county seat, Pearson, was incorporated on December 20, 1890. Other communities within Atkinson County include Willacoochee, Axson, and Kirkland. The county encompasses 345 square miles and has a predominantly agricultural economy, producing crops like tobacco, cotton, and various vegetables. Additionally, there are industries such as wood processing, garment manufacturing, and food processing, contributing to the local economy.
