Baldwin County, located within the great state of Georgia, was established on May 11, 1803, as part of an act by the Georgia General Assembly. Named in honor of Abraham Baldwin, a signer of the United States Constitution, a U.S. Senator, and founder of the University of Georgia, the county seat is Milledgeville, which served as Georgia's state capital from 1804 to 1868.

During the antebellum period, Baldwin County was a crucial center for education and economics. Georgia's first college, Georgia College, was established in Milledgeville in 1803, and the world-renowned Georgia Military College followed suit in 1879. The county's rich, fertile lands contributed to its success in agriculture, primarily in the production of cotton. This, in turn, led to the establishment of numerous plantations, which facilitated the local economy.

Following the Civil War, Milledgeville and Baldwin County experienced a period of decline but rebounded throughout the 20th century, becoming a hub for commerce, education, and manufacturing.

Fun Fact: Georgia's Old Governor's Mansion, a stunning example of Greek Revival architecture, is located in Milledgeville, Baldwin County. It served as the residence of Georgia governors from 1839 to 1868 and now operates as a house museum as well as an official historic site in Georgia, giving visitors a glimpse of the state's rich history.
