The county was carved out from portions of Jones, Monroe, Houston, and Twiggs Counties, as part of Georgia's land lotteries during the early 19th century.

Macon, the largest city and county seat of Bibb County, was established in 1823 on the banks of the Ocmulgee River. The city was named in honor of Nathaniel Macon, a distinguished North Carolina statesman who served as Speaker of the House of Representatives and a U.S. Senator. Fort Benjamin Hawkins, a major trading post with the local Creek Native Americans, was built in the area in 1806 and served as a significant factor in the establishment and development of Macon.
