Brooks County, located in the great state of Georgia, was established on December 11, 1858. It was named in honor of Preston S. Brooks, a controversial figure known for his brutal attack on Senator Charles Sumner during an 1856 debate over slavery in the U.S. Congress. The county is part of the Tallahassee Metropolitan Statistical Area and boasts a total area of 498 square miles.

The origins of Brooks County date back to Native American settlements of the Timucua and Apalachee tribes. European settlers began arriving in the area during the 1820s, mainly from the eastern states of Virginia, South Carolina, and Georgia. The economy relied on agriculture, with cotton as the key cash crop in the region.

During the Civil War, some skirmishes occurred in the area, including the Battle of Station Four, where Confederate and Union forces clashed. After the war, Brooks County experienced significant social and economic challenges through Reconstruction and well into the 20th century, including instances of racial violence and inequality.

Fun fact: Brooks County is known for its beautiful countryside and picturesque plantations, with the crown jewel being the grand plantation known as Longpine Plantation. This 4,000-acre estate is one of the largest quail hunting plantations in Georgia and features a stunning main lodge dating back to the early 1900s, reflecting the region's rich history and Southern charm.
