Burke County is located in the great state of Georgia and is part of the Augusta-Richmond County Metropolitan Area. Established on February 5, 1777, it was named in honor of Thomas Burke, a North Carolina statesman who served as a delegate to the Continental Congress and later as the Governor of North Carolina.

Burke County's history can be traced back to the pre-colonial era, with Native American tribes such as the Creek and Yuchi inhabiting the region. European settlers, primarily from England and Scotland, started to arrive in the area in the 1730s, seeking fertile land for agriculture. The arrival of these settlers led to the development of trade between the Native Americans and the Europeans, with the establishment of the trading post of Fort Augusta.

During the American Revolution, Burke County played an important role as a Loyalist stronghold for British forces. After the Revolutionary War, the county experienced significant growth, with the establishment of agricultural plantations and the introduction of the cotton gin, which revolutionized cotton production.

The Civil War also affected Burke County, resulting in the loss of lives and property. In the post-war period, the county's economy began to diversify with the introduction of new industries like lumber and turpentine production.

One fun fact about Burke County is that it was once known as the "Bird Dog Capital of the World". The region became famous for breeding some of the best bird-hunting dogs in the United States during the 20th century, including the English Setter and the American Pointer. Each year, the county hosts the Continental Field Trial Club's annual field trials event, drawing bird dog enthusiasts from across the country.
