Camden County, located in the southeastern part of the great state of Georgia, was established on February 5, 1777, as one of the eight original counties in the state. It was named in honor of Charles Pratt, 1st Earl of Camden, an influential British jurist and statesman who supported the American colonies during the pre-Revolution period.

The county's history dates back to the early European settlers and Spanish missions that took place in the 16th century. The area was later explored and claimed by both the Spanish and the English before becoming a part of the new nation, the United States of America.

During the Revolutionary War, a crucial battle, the Battle of Fort McIntosh, occurred in Camden County, which resulted in a victory for American forces. The county played a significant role in American history during the War of 1812 and the American Civil War, with forts and naval bases serving as important strongholds for military operations.

In the 19th century, the completion of the Brunswick and Western Railroad contributed to the growth of the county's economy and population. Over time, the county evolved from an agricultural-based society to a more diverse economy, with the establishment of the Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base in the 20th century bolstering the area's importance in national security.

A fun fact about Camden County is that it is home to the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, the largest and oldest federally managed wildlife refuge in the United States. The Okefenokee Swamp, a national natural landmark, covers a significant portion of the county and is known for its rich biodiversity and distinctive ecosystems, offering a unique opportunity for outdoor enthusiasts to explore its wilderness.
