Clarke County is located in the northeastern part of the great state of Georgia, USA. It was created on December 5, 1801, and named in honor of Revolutionary War hero and politician, Elijah Clarke. The county seat and largest city is Athens, which is also home to the University of Georgia, the state's flagship public university founded in 1785.

Clarke County, which originally included parts of present-day Oconee and Madison counties, was formed from a portion of Jackson County. The early economy of the county was mainly dependent on agriculture, particularly cotton cultivation. The growth of the University of Georgia in Athens played a significant role in shaping the county's social and economic development over time.

During the Civil War, Athens served as a significant munitions production site for the Confederacy, and the county survived the war with minimal damage. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Clarke County experienced growth in industry, education, and infrastructure, including the establishment of several textile mills and the expansion of railroad connections.

Today, Clarke County is well known for its rich cultural heritage, vibrant music scene, and strong focus on education and research. The University of Georgia, which boasts the Georgia Museum of Art and the State Botanical Garden, significantly contributes to the diverse atmosphere of the county.

Fun fact: Clarke County and Athens were consolidated in 1991 to form Athens-Clarke County, a unified city-county government, making it the second (after Columbus-Muscogee County) such consolidation in the state of Georgia. This unique arrangement enhances the coordination of services and resources in the region.
