Clay County is located in the southwestern part of the great state of Georgia, USA. It was established on February 16, 1854, and named in honor of the influential 19th-century American statesman, Henry Clay. The county was created from portions of Early and Randolph Counties, and the county seat was named Fort Gaines, which lies near the Chattahoochee River.

The area was originally inhabited by the Creek Indian tribe until settlers began to arrive in the early 19th century. During the era of Indian Removal in the 1830s, the Creek people were forced to give up their lands, which eventually led to the creation of counties like Clay. Fort Gaines was established in 1816 as a means of protection and as a strategic location on the Chattahoochee River.

One significant historical event that took place in Clay County was the construction of the Walter F. George Lock and Dam, completed in 1962, creating the Walter F. George Lake. This lake, also known as Lake Eufaula, is a major recreational destination in Georgia and Alabama, and it has contributed to the development of the region's economy.

One fun fact about Clay County is that it is part of the "Gopher Tortoise Capital of the World." The gopher tortoise, a keystone species native to the southeastern United States, thrives in the sandy soils and longleaf pine forests of this region. The gopher tortoises' burrows provide shelter for over 350 other species, making them vital for maintaining a healthy ecosystem in the area.
