Clayton County is a diverse and culturally rich county located in the state of Georgia, USA. Established on November 30, 1858, the county was derived from portions of Fayette and Henry counties, and named after Augustine Smith Clayton, a prominent jurist and U.S. Congressman from Georgia. The county's seat is Jonesboro, a city with significant historical relevance.

During the Civil War, Clayton County played a pivotal role as battles were fought in and around the region, particularly during the Atlanta Campaign. The Battle of Jonesboro took place in the county in 1864, which resulted in the Confederate army's failure to protect the vital railways, which eventually led to the fall of Atlanta to Union forces.

The county gained prominence through Margaret Mitchell's novel "Gone with the Wind" that featured the fictional plantation Tara. The book, published in 1936 and later adapted into a successful film, brought attention to the county and contributed to its popularity.

In the second half of the 20th century, the county experienced a significant increase in population, transforming from a rural to a suburban community. This growth led to the development of new housing, commercial spaces, and infrastructure. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, one of the busiest airports in the world, is partially located within the boundaries of Clayton County.

A fun fact about Clayton County is that it is home to the Georgia Archives, a repository of historical documents, records, and genealogical research materials. The Archives serves an essential role in preserving Georgia's history for future generations.
