Cobb County, located in the north-central part of Georgia, was established on December 3, 1832. The county was named in honor of Thomas Willis Cobb, a U.S. Representative, Senator, and Superior Court Judge. The area was initially inhabited by the Creek and Cherokee Native American tribes, who were forcibly removed in 1838 during the Trail of Tears.

Marietta, the county seat, was founded in 1834 and officially recognized as a city in 1852. The county played a significant role in the American Civil War, particularly the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain in 1864, part of the Atlanta Campaign led by Union General William T. Sherman. The Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History in Kennesaw pays tribute to this pivotal time in American history.

The development of Cobb County has been heavily influenced by the growth of transportation infrastructure, including the Western and Atlantic Railroad in the 1840s, the creation of the Bell Bomber Plant (now known as Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company) in 1942, the establishment of Dobbins Air Reserve Base in 1950, and the completion of the interstate highway system in the 1960s and 70s.

Today, Cobb County is a diverse, thriving area known for its strong educational system, robust economy, and numerous parks and recreational facilities. One fun fact about Cobb County is that it's home to the famous "Big Chicken," a 56-foot-tall steel-sided structure that has been an iconic landmark since 1963. Now a KFC restaurant, the Big Chicken is adored by locals and has become a reference point for providing directions in the area.

Another interesting fact about Cobb County is that it is home to the Atlanta Braves, a Major League Baseball team. The Braves played their home games at Turner Field in Atlanta from 1997 until 2016, when they moved to a new stadium, SunTrust Park, located in the Cumberland/Galleria area of Cobb County. SunTrust Park is known for its unique features, including a restaurant with a chop house theme, a 90-foot tall metal sculpture of a baseball, and a zip line that allows fans to travel across the stadium.
