Columbia County, located in the great state of Georgia, was established on December 10, 1790, and carved out of Richmond County as a part of the early growth and development of Georgia. Named in honor of Christopher Columbus, the famed explorer, Columbia County is part of the Augusta-Richmond County Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Initially, the county was primarily an agricultural region, producing crops such as cotton, corn, and tobacco. The construction of the Augusta Canal in 1845 and the establishment of Evans as the county seat in 1855 contributed to the area's gradual economic transformation. The coming of the Georgia Railroad in the 1830s also spurred growth, allowing for easier transportation of goods and people.

During the Civil War, Columbia County was impacted but saw no significant battles. However, the Confederate Powder Works, an essential facility for the Confederacy, was located just outside of the county in neighboring Augusta.

In the 20th century, the completion of Clarks Hill Dam in 1954 and the creation of the Clarks Hill Lake resulted in increased recreational and residential development in Columbia County. In the following decades, the area experienced rapid population growth and economic diversification, including a strong reliance on the service industry and Fort Gordon's cybersecurity initiatives.

A fun fact about Columbia County is that it is home to the Savannah Rapids Park, which offers beautiful views of the Savannah River and features the Augusta Canal Headgates, an historic site that played a crucial role in the region's industrialization.

Over the years, Columbia County has developed a rich cultural, historical, and recreational legacy, making it an attractive destination for both visitors and residents in the state of Georgia.
