Early County, located in the southwestern part of the state of Georgia, was established on December 15, 1818. It was named in honor of Georgia's former Governor Peter Early, who served from 1813 to 1815. The county seat, Blakely, was founded in 1825 and named after Captain Johnson Blakely, an American naval officer who went missing during the War of 1812.

The region's landscape primarily consists of flat to gently rolling terrain, with rich, fertile soil ideal for agriculture. Early County prospered mainly from its agricultural industry, with the cultivation of cotton, peanuts, and corn being the primary crops. The area also had an extensive history of indigenous inhabitation, notably by the Apalachicola tribe and the Creek Indian Nation, before European settlers arrived.

One fun fact about Early County is that it is home to the prehistoric Kolomoki Mounds State Historic Park, which is one of the largest and oldest Woodland Indian mound complexes in the southeastern United States. It was occupied between 350 and 750 A.D. and contains seven preserved ceremonial and burial mounds, providing a unique glimpse into the rich Native American history of the region.
