Effingham County, located in the great state of Georgia, was established on February 5, 1777, as one of the original eight counties carved from the British province of Georgia. It was named in honor of Lord Effingham, an English nobleman who championed the colonists' cause during the American Revolutionary War. The county seat is Springfield, and the largest city is Rincon.

In its early days, Effingham County was primarily an agricultural area, with cotton, sugar cane, and rice being the primary crops. The introduction of railroads in the 19th century boosted the development of the region and facilitated the transportation of goods. The county also has a rich history associated with the American Civil War. During the war, Effingham County was an important source of food and other resources for the Confederacy.

Fun fact: One of the unique landmarks in Effingham County is the Jerusalem Lutheran Church, which is the oldest church building in the state of Georgia. It was constructed in 1769, before the county was even established, and is an example of early colonial architecture. The church is still active today and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
