Emanuel County, located in the great state of Georgia, was established on December 10, 1812, and named in honor of Georgia Governor David Emanuel (1744-1808) who was of English descent. The county is situated in the southeastern part of Georgia, bordering Toombs, Bulloch, Jenkins, Johnson, Laurens, Montgomery, and Treutlen counties. Swainsboro is the county seat of Emanuel County and serves as its central hub.

The economy of Emanuel County in the 19th and early 20th centuries was primarily agricultural, focusing on cotton, timber, and livestock. This region also played a vital role in the development of railroads, with the Savannah & Southwestern Railroad being one of the significant rail systems.

Emanuel County has experienced notable historical milestones, including being part of the 1821 Georgia Land Lottery, and having Thomas Jefferson's granddaughter, Cornelia Jefferson Randolph, die within its limits, where she was briefly interred.
