Evans County is a small county located in the southeastern part of the state of Georgia, USA. It was created on August 11th, 1914, by an act of the Georgia General Assembly and is named in honor of Clement Anselm Evans, a Confederate general, state senator, lawyer, and Methodist clergyman. Covering an area of approximately 183 square miles, it is one of the youngest and smallest counties in Georgia.

Before its establishment, Evans County was a part of Bulloch and Tattnall counties. Claxton, the county seat, was incorporated in 1894 and has earned the nickname "Fruitcake Capital of the World" due to its fruitcake manufacturing industry, supplying over four million pounds of fruitcake annually.

The history of Evans County is strongly linked to agriculture, especially since the primeval forests were cleared for cotton farming in the early 19th century. Over the years, the farming industry diversified to include tobacco, peanuts, and other crops. Today, modern agriculture, timber industry, and manufacturing are some of the county's most significant economic contributors.

One fun fact about Evans County is that it is home to the annual "Claxton Rattlesnake and Wildlife Festival," formerly known as the "Rattlesnake Roundup." The festival takes place every March and includes events centered around promoting wildlife awareness and preservation. It features snake handling demonstrations, arts and crafts, food vendors, and other attractions, making it an exciting event for the local community and tourists alike.
