Gilmer County, located in the great state of Georgia, was established on December 3, 1832. It is part of the Appalachian Mountains region and lies in the north-central part of the state. Named after George R. Gilmer, a distinguished Georgia statesman and two-time governor, the county encompasses an area of approximately 431 square miles.

The beginning years of Gilmer County were marked by rapid growth due to the fertile lands for farming and the discovery of gold in the region. The Georgia Gold Rush in the 1820s and 1830s attracted settlers and miners, which led to the development of the area.

However, the establishment of the county was not without conflict, as it was situated on lands originally inhabited by the Cherokee Nation. This led to the forced relocation of the indigenous Cherokee people during the infamous Trail of Tears, a series of forced migrations between 1836 and 1839.

The city of Ellijay serves as the county seat, and the county is divided into several smaller communities, including East Ellijay, Cherry Log, and the picturesque Cartecay Valley. The region experienced economic expansion in the 20th century, mainly due to agriculture, timber, and textile industries.

A fun fact about Gilmer County is that it is known as the "Apple Capital of Georgia." Each October, it hosts the Georgia Apple Festival, drawing thousands of visitors from across the state and beyond to celebrate the abundant apple harvest. The county's orchards produce a large variety of apples that are distributed throughout the region, showcasing their contributions to Georgia's agricultural realm.
