Gordon County is located in northwest Georgia, United States, and was established on February 13, 1850. Named after Georgia native William Washington Gordon, who was the first Georgian to graduate from West Point Military Academy, become a prominent Savannah businessman and successful railroad executive. The county was created from portions of Floyd and Bartow counties, and Calhoun was designated as the county seat.

Gordon County was at the heart of Cherokee territory when European settlers began to arrive in the early 19th century. The famous Trail of Tears, which forced the Cherokee Nation to relocate to Oklahoma in 1838, had an impact on the local community. This removal opened up the territory to further settlement, and the area experienced rapid development after the discovery of gold in 1828.

During the Civil War, Gordon County's strategic significance increased as it became the site of several key engagements, including the Battles of Resaca and Adairsville, fought in 1864 as part of the Atlanta Campaign. The county's significant role in these battles led to some damage and disruption to local life.

The economy of Gordon County evolved over time, shifting from agriculture-based to industry-based. The area was well-known for mining limestone, marble, and slate, which contributed to the growth and development of the region. The carpet and flooring industries later became major sources of employment in the county, with Dalton, a nearby city, earning the title of "Carpet Capital of the World."

A fun fact about Gordon County is that it is home to the New Echota Historic Site, which was the capital of the Cherokee Nation from 1825 until their forced removal in the 1830s. This site serves as a reminder of the tumultuous history and impact of the Cherokee people in northwestern Georgia.
