Greene County is located in the great state of Georgia and was established on February 3, 1786. It was named in honor of General Nathanael Greene, a Revolutionary War hero who commanded the Southern campaign that led to the British surrender at Yorktown. The county seat, Greensboro, also derives its name from General Greene.

In the early years, Greene County was primarily an agricultural region, with cotton being the main cash crop. The county also had a rich history of trade due to its location near the Oconee River, which facilitated trade between the upcountry and the coastal regions. The construction of the Georgia Railroad in the 1830s further improved transportation in the area and connected Greene County to other parts of Georgia and the United States.

Over time, Greene County has experienced growth and change, embracing various industries in addition to agriculture. Today, it remains a key part of Georgia's history and is home to approximately 17,000 residents.

A fun fact about Greene County is that it houses the historic "Old Gaol," one of the oldest standing masonry jail structures in Georgia. Built around 1807, the Old Gaol once held incarcerated individuals, including slaves, before they were transported to various locations for trial or punishment. It is now preserved as a historical site that allows visitors to learn about Greene County's past.
