Habersham County is located in the northeastern part of Georgia, in the United States. Established on December 15, 1818, the county was named in honor of Colonel Joseph Habersham, a decorated Revolutionary War hero and three-term Postmaster General under President George Washington. Its county seat, Clarkesville, was established in 1821.

Habersham County's early economy was primarily based on agriculture, with cotton being the dominant crop until the 1920s. The arrival of the railroad in the 1880s encouraged industrialization and tourism, eventually diversifying the local economy. A significant number of historic sites can be found in the county, including 19th-century buildings and prehistoric Native American sites.

One fun fact about Habersham County is the Tallulah Gorge, which is a 2-mile-long, 1,000-foot-deep canyon located partly in the county. The gorge is a popular destination for hikers, sightseers, and outdoor enthusiasts. In 1970, the French high-wire artist Philippe Petit performed a tightrope walk from one side of the gorge to the other, drawing national attention and further cementing Habersham County's mark in history.
