Hancock County, located in the great state of Georgia, was established on December 17, 1793. It was named in honor of John Hancock, the first signer of the United States Declaration of Independence and prominent American patriot. The county was formed from portions of Greene and Washington counties, and the county seat is Sparta.

In the 19th century, Hancock County was primarily known for its agriculture, including the production of cotton. The county was once one of the wealthiest counties in Georgia; however, its economic prosperity declined significantly following the Civil War as the region dealt with the loss of slave labor and the impacts of the boll weevil on cotton crops.

In the 20th century, forestry and farming remained prominent industries in the county, but a shift towards a more diverse economy, including manufacturing, helped to maintain the vitality of the region.

One fun fact about Hancock County is that it is home to an architectural treasure, the Rockby Estate. Constructed in the 1850s, this historic antebellum mansion is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and showcases Greek Revival architecture that exemplifies the region's rich history and culture.
