Henry County is located in the north-central part of Georgia and was officially established on December 24, 1821. The county was named in honor of Patrick Henry, a prominent American statesman and Founding Father who is best known for his influential role in drafting the U.S. Constitution and giving his famous "Give me liberty, or give me death!" speech. Henry County's county seat is McDonough, which was named after naval officer Commodore Thomas Macdonough who played a significant role in the War of 1812.

The county's early years saw the region develop through agriculture, with cotton being the primary crop. At the time of its establishment, Henry County was much larger than it is today, comprising about 3,000 square miles. Throughout the 19th century, parts of the county were ceded to create new counties, eventually resulting in its present-day size of approximately 327 square miles.

Henry County played a notable role during the American Civil War when some of the final battles of the Atlanta Campaign took place in the region, specifically around the city of Stockbridge.

In the 20th century, the county experienced significant economic and population growth, boosted by the creation of the Atlanta Motor Speedway, a prominent NASCAR racing track, in 1960. Today, Henry County is known for its blend of suburban and rural communities, and its cultural amenities such as the annual Geranium Festival, numerous parks, and historical sites.

Fun fact: In 2010, a bronze statue of "The Birth of Freedom," featuring former President Abraham Lincoln, Patrick Henry, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., was unveiled in downtown McDonough. The statue symbolizes the commitment to liberty and civil rights shared by all three historical figures.
