It is approximately 55 miles south of Atlanta and was originally carved from a portion of Dooly County. The county was named in honor of Governor John Houstoun, who served Georgia as a governor, a Continental Congress delegate, and a Revolutionary War officer. He played a pivotal role in shaping the state's early history.

Perry serves as the county seat, and other notable cities and towns within the county include Warner Robins, Centerville, and Robins Air Force Base (RAFB), a vital hub for the region's economy.
