Liberty County, located in the southeastern part of Georgia, has a rich history that dates back to the Colonial era. Established on February 5, 1777, it was one of the original colonial parishes and also one of the first eight counties created after Georgia became a state. The county was named in honor of the popular American ideal of liberty, reflecting the sentiments of the time as the Revolutionary War took place.

In the early years, Liberty County's economy was primarily based on agriculture. Rice, cotton, and timber were the primary products which led to the rise of plantations throughout the region. As an important agricultural center, the county had a substantial enslaved population, which later gained their freedom after the Civil War.

During the Civil War, the county played a significant role as Union forces invaded the coastline of Georgia and occupied the region. This led to the destruction of Fort Morris, an important military fortification which now serves as a historic site in Liberty County.

In the 20th century, the establishment of Fort Stewart, the largest Army installation east of the Mississippi River, brought about a significant increase in population and economic growth. Today, Fort Stewart remains a key element of Liberty County's community and economy.

A fun fact about Liberty County is that it is home to the historic Midway Church and Cemetery, built in 1792. This site symbolizes the county's rich history and features the graves of several Revolutionary War heroes, as well as other prominent members of Georgia's early history. Visitors to the Midway Museum can learn about the county's Colonial-era past and its contributions to American history.
