Lumpkin County is a county located in the north-central portion of the U.S. state of Georgia. It was created on December 3, 1832, and named after Wilson Lumpkin, a former Georgia governor and congressman. The county seat is Dahlonega, which is a historically significant city due to its importance in the Georgia Gold Rush of the 1820s. This gold rush predated the more famous California Gold Rush by 20 years.

Before the arrival of European settlers, the area was inhabited by the Cherokee people. Following the discovery of gold and the signing of the Treaty of New Echota in 1835, the federal government forced the Cherokee to leave their lands in Georgia, leading to the infamous Trail of Tears in which thousands of Native Americans were forcibly relocated to present-day Oklahoma. Afterward, the county's economy thrived on gold mining and agriculture, including vineyards and wineries.

Today, Lumpkin County is known for its picturesque landscapes, wineries, and vibrant art scene. It is also home to the University of North Georgia, established in 1873 as North Georgia Agricultural College.

Fun Fact: Dahlonega, the county seat, was the site of America's first major gold rush in 1828. The gold deposits in this region were so significant that the U.S. government established a Mint Branch in Dahlonega that produced gold coins from 1838 until 1861.
